News scoop: ATS Group invests in a “Battery Energy Storage System” (BESS) on its own production site.

 

The future production site of the ATS Group at the Langerbruggekaai-Ghent will showcase all the technologies ATS Group has to offer. Specifically focusing on energy optimization, ATS Group and parent company EDF Luminus want to take on the pole position. The installation of a BESS is a key part of the investment and is a real pioneering project.  

Currently, electricity markets are under a lot of strain and it is full of challenges towards the future. Renewable decentralized energy production and the infrastructure of electrical vehicles are just some examples. A lot of these evolutions will result in financial implications in relation to grid utilization and grid infrastructure. ATS and EDF are convinced that BESS and energy storage in general will be a key part in the network of the future.

 

Investing today for the world of tomorrow

ATS and EDF Luminus want to give answers today for the challenges of tomorrow. In this framework, it is decided to invest in innovation, knowhow and engineering in the specific domain of energy storage. The goal is to optimize energy consumption on our site.

Specifically, ATS is investing in a system capable of storing 270kWh of energy in Lithium-ion battery stacks. This is a range suitable and applicable for other SME’s and industrial facilities in order to increase self-consumption. Soon everybody will be able to validate that storage systems are interesting and viable for own consumption.

 

The foundation is already laid out

The aim is to get the BESS operational by mid-2018. In the mean time numerous preparations are being made. The grid compliance study - as requested by the Distribution Network Operator EANDIS- has been initiated. But this is just a start, as may different questions will pop up during the project. Which battery system will be used? How can we integrate the battery technically. How will ATS manage this new flexibility of the BESS to the specific production process. Which system will be used as an energy management system? One thing is sure, it will be an intriguing story!
